ROMPin’ in the park

Posted in Uncategorized by Emily on June 26, 2008

One of my assignments yesterday was to head out to Yellow Creek Park where the ROMP festival will be taking place for the next few days. My goal was to capture something different, something more personal that the paper hasn’t ever covered before. Turns out, the M-I had never covered any of the families that come in in RVs and camp out through the festival. So, I found this lovely family and snapped some pictures of them.

I’ve been feeling a little off my game all morning, so it wasn’t any huge surprise to me that my pictures weren’t as great as they could have been. I got a few good shots of some people in the cockpit of one of the planes, but they refused to give me their names or be featured in any sort of publication. I think that has to be the toughest part of the job… people who hate you just because you’re the media. Or maybe it’s just because I have a nose ring.

shootin’ pool

It was raining when I got to work today, so when I was sent out on a feature hunt, I was less than thrilled. Rain means everyone in Owensboro goes inside and shuts the door, and it often feels impossible to find something good. After about a half an hour of driving around in the rain with no luck, I decided to cash in my idea of shooting senior citizens playing pool at the senior center. While this may not have produced the most visually interesting pictures, the stories you hear while you’re with these guys more than make up for the lack of cool, flashing lights and bar background.

These three Sisters gathered today when the Ursuline Sisters of Mt. St. Joseph were honored for their attempts to make their campus greener. They were absolutely adorable, as you can see.

If I could choose what I took pictures of every day, I think the majority of my work would be with kids. They just know how to have so much fun!

Saturday morning I got up at 7 a.m. sharp to drive to Whitesville to shoot pictures at a triathlon. Terrified of how exactly I was going to shoot it, I loaded by 2gb card into my camera, pulled the battery from its charger on my wall, slipped on my flip flops and was out the door. It was an easy and pretty drive and before I knew it I was standing on the dock waiting for the race to begin. With the blow of the horn, the first round of men were off.

After an 800-yard swim, participants ran up out of the lake and up the hill to where their bikes and biking gear was waiting for them.

And last but not least, competitors hopped off their bikes and ran the last leg of the race. At the finish line, families and friends cheered on everyone who ran across the finish line.

This morning I had a little extra time while I was waiting for the triathlon to finish, so I found a few people and shot some feature pictures. When I got back, I figured it would be fun to try some different tools and things on photoshop, especially since I want to start doing more portrait and studio work to go on top of photojournalism.

Yesterday I met a man outside of my apartment who walks his cat on a leash. Today I found him again, and shot pictures of him for the newspaper.

While this certainly wasn’t the PGA tour that Britney got to shoot, it was golf, and it was fun!
