Fire puppy

Dumpling, an 8-week-old Dachshund puppy, survived a fire in a trailer home today.

The Moose Lodge caught on fire yesterday. It was abandoned, however, so no one was injured. Firefighters didn’t know what started the fire. The light was spectacular, though I’m not sure how good of a job I did in trying to capture it.

Prior to the fire, I feature hunted.

And I also shot little league.

Today I shot pictures of Fred Hina, the former fire chief of the OFD. I’ve been feeling like my photos have been looking too point-and-shoot, so I was really trying to get something different.

ROMPin’ in the park

Posted in Uncategorized by Emily on June 26, 2008

One of my assignments yesterday was to head out to Yellow Creek Park where the ROMP festival will be taking place for the next few days. My goal was to capture something different, something more personal that the paper hasn’t ever covered before. Turns out, the M-I had never covered any of the families that come in in RVs and camp out through the festival. So, I found this lovely family and snapped some pictures of them.

Airport Open House

I’ve been feeling a little off my game all morning, so it wasn’t any huge surprise to me that my pictures weren’t as great as they could have been. I got a few good shots of some people in the cockpit of one of the planes, but they refused to give me their names or be featured in any sort of publication. I think that has to be the toughest part of the job… people who hate you just because you’re the media. Or maybe it’s just because I have a nose ring.

shootin’ pool

Posted in Uncategorized by Emily on June 20, 2008

It was raining when I got to work today, so when I was sent out on a feature hunt, I was less than thrilled. Rain means everyone in Owensboro goes inside and shuts the door, and it often feels impossible to find something good. After about a half an hour of driving around in the rain with no luck, I decided to cash in my idea of shooting senior citizens playing pool at the senior center. While this may not have produced the most visually interesting pictures, the stories you hear while you’re with these guys more than make up for the lack of cool, flashing lights and bar background.

These three Sisters gathered today when the Ursuline Sisters of Mt. St. Joseph were honored for their attempts to make their campus greener. They were absolutely adorable, as you can see.
